Hi...

First of all apologies for my first post being 'a please help me' post! Laughing Out Loud

I got a TomTom 720T for Christmas and I have a some questions... I travel a hell of a lot with my job on the road so the answers will be greatly appreciated!

1. I've synched it up to the radio but whatever frequency I use, the sound quality is hissy, like a station that isn't tuned properly. Does anyone know a good frequency to use to ensure good sound quality? I am from the UK, and have the TomTom on my right.

2. I have the RDS-TMC receiver running up the windscreen on the right and then accross. Is this setup ok?

3. I'm thinking about leaving the RDS-TMC receiver attached to the screen all the time as I'm always in and out of the car, I have a little sticker saying 'No valuables are left in this vehicle' as have left the holder from my PDA connected before and have had no problems (touch wood). Is it a different story with the receiver tho, i.e do thieves put windows in for RDS-TMC receivers?

4. And last of all... what's the deal with the reading text messages aloud? I have tried both my N95 (personal phone) and Blackberry 8310 (work) and it won't read the messages on either? The options are greyed out? The Blackberry won't connect to GPRS either with it?

SORRY for all these questions... just a bit frustrating when u get a great Christmas present to find some things don't work... and you can guess, it was a present I asked for! Smile

Can only help with #1 and 4....

1. The FM is just not very good quality. I also find the level is too low, so for music especially you have to turn the radio volume up very high, which makes any hiss or interference worse.
The actual frequency to use will vary in different parts of the country (and even time of day! A good frequency in the morning will often be busier in the evening). In the old days, radios had tuning knobs which made it easy to find an empty space, but now everything is automated and radios helpfully try to scan to good stations, manual tuning is quite tricky to do. All I can suggest is trying a few frequencies at the very bottom and top of the available range. I use 106.4 or 99.1, but neither is perfect.

Bluetooth might be better, but I have a line input on my radio so use that instead.

4. There is a phone compatibility chart on the TT website HERE. It's not totally up to date, but is a start. Typically, it doesn't list either of your phones, but it certainly shows that many phones are only partially compatible (i.e. ok for calls, but not for texts. Or can send texts but not receive etc.).

I seem to remember someone reporting that the Nokia N95 WILL work, so long as you update the phone's firmware to the latest version. I'll see if I can dig out the forum post.

EDIT: Here's the post I remembered:
TT 720 Handsfree to N95 - Does it work for you ?, but it actually only mentions handsfree, and the update doesn't sound too clever anyway! Sorry...

Thanks for that Andy! Smile

Guess the TomTom 720 really ain't as good as it makes out to be.

Can anyone answer #2 and #3?

For number 2 it really depends on the area and the windscreen you have but if you are getting reports and a green light in the top corner of your TT then leave it there. If not try another position i.e. along the dash board.

for number 3 then i would remove it. Thiefs are breaking into cars even if they see the ring that your dock leaves on the windscreen to see if you have put it in the glove box but your sticker might be of use but is it worth the risk.

1. Radio frequency. I use 88.0 and only get interference or poor performance on very rare occasions. I've used it from here to London (where I do sometimes get noise), Southampton, Brighton, Swansea, Plymouth, Birmingham, Warwick, Milton Keynes successfully. But I haven't been everywhere with it yet.
2. My aerial goes from bottom right to centre, then vertical to top of screen centre. I've only been using it for a couple of days. It seems to vary - some people have it like me, others like you. Suck it and see.
3. Low-lifes are unpredictable. I had my passenger window done on my drive (according to my crim neighbour at 1:30am - he saw them, he says, but didn't come to tell me because it was a bit late to be waking me up!) with the suckers for my TT devices left on the windscreen. They didn't get the devices which weren't in there. They didn't take the suckers. They took my pack of classical music CDs - Suckers!! I would imagine the thin wire doesn't look like much of an attraction and I'm leaving mine in (but then, my crim neighbour now knows there's nothing worth nicking in there!). The safest course is to take everything out and leave the vehicle as naked as the day it was delivered to you. Following my example can only make you sorry, never happy - leaving it in there, it can only ever be stolen. They don't have any idea of its value and wouldn't get much cash even if they did. But it'll cost you £50 to replace, plus whatever for the glass AND you can't get Traffic info until you do replace it and it'll be unpleasant driving without glass. Balance the respective inconveniences.

I think I'm just gonna leave the wire in there, it's a company car so my company would pay for the glass.... but yeah, buying another wire and driving with no glass would be uncomfortable! Hopefully the sticker will be detterant.

Thanks for your help guys Smile

Aye, well, just remember that your "little sticker saying 'No valuables are left in this vehicle' " is an obvious lie! Quite apart from the fact that EVERYBODY has one of those stickers, they can see an attractive looking bit of wire like wot goes to something tasty AND there's a nice PDA mount on show. Just thought I'd cheer you up. Twisted Evil Joker

Are you sending BOTH navigation voice and music to the radio?
I you followed that advice with just the music on the FM and the voice on the internal speaker, you'd blow your head off!! Shocked
