Hi all
I currently have an Orange SPV M700 (HTC 3600) which has built-in GPS and has TT6.03 onboard. I'm broadly satisfied with this but (for reasons I won't bore you with) the time is nearing when I have to change it.
As it seems obvious that TT are slowly abandoning the WinCE platform, plus stand-alone satnav devices are getting cheaper and better all the time I'm looking at what other options there are.
As I see it my options are:
1) A new WinCE PDA (which one?) and load TT6 on and hope they keep updating the maps
2) A new WinCE PDA and some satnav software other than TT
3) A dedicated satnav device and forget the PDA aspect (though a PDA would be useful for other things).
Other info that may be relevant:
- I need accurate maps (UK and Europe) and good navigation; not interested in combining it with hands-free phone or mp3 player etc
- I walk/ramble and ideally I'd like something that will either/or display position in lat/long or GR, or allow Memory-map to be loaded
So, what does the team think (says he, showing his age) ?

If its any help, being a dedicated PDA user and again concerned about the future TomTom upgrades I have just purchased the Asus a696 and transferred tomtom 6 to it, first impressions good, it comes with Win6, Wifi,Bluetooth, Irda and 4 configurable buttons (gives instant screen rotate), double size battery(2600ma) is available although protrudes out of back another cover comes with it(ideal for walking) and batteries are removable, also can run memory map and for me seems future proof software wise, transreflective screen, general price around £185 about £60 less than the MIO 560 which i think less functional, I have fitted an 8gb SD card although I believe it will take 16gb, I have put quite a few MP3s and 10 videos on it and it doesnt seem to make a dent in it, My only thing against it is the USB/Charging socket is on the side but this is purely personal because i mainly use in portrait mode and need to learn a new way of holding it, I am looking at upgrading software to IGO 8, These are my personal thoughts but Hope this helps.
Add also has sirf3 reciever which is integral within the unit so is very slimline _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8
You could also look at some of the new mobile phones which have GPS built in like the newer Nokia's.
GPS is a huge market now, but I think the actual PDA add on side is not so good as piracy was rife. Just a quick Google search will show how bad the problem is.
With PND devices the software is easier locked to only work on that device. _________________ Navigon 8450 LIVE
Only reason i have stuck with TT is because I am used to it and already have the latest version (pda version anyway) and after spending on the asus cannot afford to upgrade at moment, but intend to upgrade to either Copilot or IGO 8, also I understand Igo may be adding text to speech? hopefully in the future, so not rushing at moment and this probabilty puts the igo ahead for me, another reason is that although tomtom UK 675 1409 map is lacking on some roads, The Earlier WE 675 1322 shows the missing roads which i can switch over at will, the reaons I stick to a PDA is the dependency on Contacts,Spreadsheets,Larger Screen and versatility. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8

I think the reason behind this was two different map releases that used data from different mapping companies, Navteq provided for one and TeleAtlas supplied the other.
I used to use my PDA for GPS vehicle based applications but these days I find the PNA much better at most operations, where it is let down is the sometimes difficult combination using a phone to supply data to the device.
The mobile phone PDA with built in GPS is about as good as you can get for a truly portable device that offers everything in one go. I currently use the HTC Touch Cruise for my phone and PDA, in the car it is one of the TomTom PNA units used, but I will be switching phones soon to the HTC Raphael when it comes out due to the VGA screen and higher data connection speeds for mobile internet use.
Others to look at are the HTC Artemis, TyTN-II, Athena (although this is a massive 5" screen unit) - note all the above devices are true PDA based mobile phones not the Nokia style units which use a different OS and are not (yet) provided with true variety of software, neither is the built in GPS receiver available for use by all applications on the Nokia's currently.
As for the software piracy issue, sadly this affects all devices, the earlier attention of the hackers to crack the PDA based applications has shifted focus to the PNA devices these days. The last major TomTom map update was seen hacked within a couple of days of release, it is this activity that spoils the ongoing progress and development of new software for us to enjoy - Mike
Mike I do not wish to appear to be knocking any other units i.e. PND or Smartphones I think its personal usage that dictates which unit to use, for me I dont have the requirements for a built in phone so the PDA route is ideally suited for me, I did once have a first generation smartphone but found it too complicated for everyday use, addressing the point on software admittedly the software situation is of concern but hopefully other companies may see the gap and fulfill despite the piracy situation.
Add: yes you are quite correct on the map issue, one being Teleatlas and the other WE being Navteq _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8

Yes, I've discounted Nokias for similar reasons. I like the look of the HTC Diamond - which also seems likely to have up-to-date TT when it arrives - but the crucial question is When? I've seen opinions ranging from July to next year to never ... _________________ Brian Abbott

The Diamond is already out in the shops, for a start look Here it is costly at just under £500 but far cheaper if purchased on contract.
The Raphael is the big unknown as to if, when, cost etc see Here - I am willing to wait though as I need the flexibility of the memory card slot and the keyboard will be handy, I really missed this on the Artemis - Mike
