Following a delay of around 12 months due to administrative issues, Ireland has installed its first average speed cameras.
Point-to-point cameras now monitor the average speed of drivers using the Dublin Port Tunnel.
If a motorist's average speed exceeds the 80 KPH limit they will be issued an €80 fine and receive three penalty points on their licence.
Ireland's transport minister, Shane Ross said: "Any initiative that has the potential to save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roads is to be welcomed".
24,000 vehicles use the route daily.

No KSI's at all have been quoted for this road.
Here is the "justification"
"Traffic levels through Dublin Tunnel have increased by 40% over the last five years and as a result, there is statistically an increase in the potential for collisions and incidents.
Average speed camera enforcement systems look to mitigate the potential for these incidents as, statistically, there is typically a 50% reduction in the collision rate once in operation".
So, we can expect 50% less KSI's. Half of nothing is...

Yes, but you'll still have the 50% that hasn't been reduced. Think "Half Full" not "Half Empty". _________________ Dennis

Its good to see that cameras are going in here everyone speeds through there at the moment.
I don't think that the fine and points would be enforceable on non residents of Ireland |

| If there haven't been any accidents, why worry if they are driving quickly. It's obviously safe to do so. |
